What a Joke.

So. Pissed. Off.

I called the financial lady at U of I this morning just so I could wrap my head around what might happen if we need to do another round of IVF.  Now just so you know... I am not convinced that this cycle didn't work but I want to be prepared for what comes next if I get a negative blood test on Friday- that's just how I work....be as prepared as possible for the worst and go from there.

Just to give you some background... Steve and I qualified for their "Warranty Program" which I will now refer to as their "Fucking Joke Program".  The program was explained to us this way- 1. If the fresh cycle doesn't work we get to try again with as many frozen cycles as we have frozen embryos for free (except we didn't get any frozen embryos) 2. We get a refund of most of our money if the procedure doesn't result in pregnancy.

Now back to financial lady.  So I ask how we can go about doing another cycle if this one doesn't end in pregnancy and I tell her we want to do the "Fucking Joke Program" again.  She proceeds to tell me that it is more than likely that I won't qualify for the program again because I only ended up with 3 embryos and their criteria is at least 5 embryos.  Um excuse me??  When was someone going to tell me this?  And who the hell was in charge of my stim meds and all my dosages??  The nurse specifically told me they were using the lightest dose possible- why is that?  Oh, that's so we have no chance of doing the "Fucking Joke Program" again. I see how this works now.

I feel like I've been royally screwed by U of I and if I don't get a positive beta on Friday someone in that office is going to sit down with us and tell us what the hell we're supposed to do next. And it is not going to be pretty.

  1. oh gosh :( did you have to sign a contract to be a part of that program? i think they would have to refund your money unless that stipulation (>5 embryos) was in the paperwork you signed...

  2. I agree with the first commenter. Ugh.. how frustrating! I hope that you end up with your BFP though!

  3. We will get a refund but we wanted to do the warranty program again if we don't get pregnant this time. But now we don't qualify.

  4. I think this is pretty typical for "warranty" programs, unfortunately...the one I was looking into had similar restrictions, and ultimately we decided not to do it...

  5. That's strange restrictions. Have seen these programs but don't know much really. Sorry for bad news when you just wanted to be prepared. Hopefully you won't be needing their service again!

  6. Oh man, that sucks. I like new moniker of "Fucking Joke Program" though. They should run with that.

  7. That just sucks. It's not fair that these details weren't explained to you.

BUT, I'm really really hoping none of this will matter in a few days...

  8. I hear you. We didn't do it the first time, because it was more expensive. I asked about it when we were having all our troubles getting started and they said I wouldn't qualify now because of my "history".

In other words, if they think you'll get pregnant on the first try and they'll make a huge profit, you qualify. If they don't, so they'd make a lesser profit or none at all, you won't.

  9. So sorry you have to deal with such frustrations. I'm sending positive thoughts your way for Friday.

  10. I agree with Melissa, it sounds like "the house always wins".

If you don't agree with the person who sits down to talk to you, ask to speak to their supervisor. Do this again and again. Ask whom you can make a complaint to.

Even if this gets you nowhere, at the very least, you'll feel like you tried.

  11. I'm so flipping mad that they did this to you, B. I hate to say it but we chose not to go through U of I because of that financial department. They tried to screw us out of money too and we walked away.

I hope so much that you get your bfp on Friday and you don't have to worry about the warranty program.

Go Hawkeyes but screw the U of I financial department!

  12. oOOH - that's totally ridiculous. This is definitely journey that I've learned to stand up for myself on. Good luck getting them straightened out!

  13. Hi Bridget,
I just found your blog through Christa. I live near IC and am also a victim of the UofI warranty program. My first IVF cycle, they totally botched and used a standard protocol instead of an individualized approach, and I was oversuppressed. My second IVF resulted in a cancelled transfer. They pretty much just wrote me off after that. One of the Dr.'s is so rude and mean to me, and I now refuse to work with her. I can just about guess who you're referring to in the financial department. Ugh.

I am really wanting to go elsewhere for treatment, but now I definitely won't qualify for any warranty programs after my crappy cycles at the U. I hate that I keep going back there because we live so close and it's super convenient.

I don't have my blog posts labeled, but I was IVFing from March-August, 2010, and you can read all about my experiences with them.

I am so sorry. I hope that all of this is for nothing, and that you get your BFP :)

  14. Based on these comments, they are running a real racquet up there! You should threaten lawyers and see what you can get.

  15. That it terrible!! We weren't eligible either because I had a past mc. They def make the programs geared for the minority of patients and leave out some details too. I hope though this stress is for nothing and friday you have good news :)

  16. That stinks! Appeal, question, submit a written complaint... do what you have to so that if these places are a rip off that at least you make it hard on them.... ugh! I hope you don't need to!

  17. What a crap day! UGH! stay strong, document everything and hopefully this is all for not because this round will work! I can't imagine how terrible this was to hear. Hang in there and know that I would fly out to U of I and bitch slap some financial people if you needed it :) Although I am not that "scary" I can be with all the extra hormones!!! Hugs and postive vibes!

  18. I'd be pissed off too...total BS. I really hope Friday brings you great news so you can tell them to kiss it! IF you end up needing another cycle is it possible to switch to a different office?

  19. I hope you pee a "smiley face" soon! If you're hormonal now - I can't wait until you're actually pregnant! :)
    Love ya!

  20. How incredibly frustrating. I am hoping for you that this doesn't come into play.

  21. I agree that exploring all possible outcomes ahead of time is a good idea and eliminates unpleasant surprises. Still, now that you know, don't dwell on it too much. If needed, you'll deal with it, but for now it is a good idea to stay positive.

  22. TOTALLY sucky!!!! Yes, I would agree someone has some 'plaining to do.

  23. Okay so I am not going through exactly what you are, but believe me this blight ovum thing I have going on and being pregnant with no baby inside sucks badly and I am hormonal as hell!!! I love myjourneythruinfertility's comment about flying to U of I to bitch slap some people....that is right up my alley these days! And of course Adams comment then cracked me up. See hormones bouncing all over the place. I am hating life right now and can't wait to feel like "me" again. I love you girl and I pray everyday for you to "pee a smiley face"!!!
