Another post on crying...

Well, my blog is all about what we are going through....so here is another post on crying because that is our life right now.

First off, we took Emily to the Dr on Friday and she is healthy and normal (whew!)  She does have blocked tear ducts so her eyes have been getting goopy especially with all of the crying.  Poor sweet baby girl.

Secondly, thank you all so much for the support and comments over the past few days- they help so much and make me feel a little less crazy.

During one of Emily's many crying fits this weekend, Steve was sorting through some things in her room that we brought home from the hospital.  He starts laughing.  I asked him what was so funny and he showed me a DVD titled- "The Period of PURPLE Crying" and right on the front of this DVD is this question- "Did you know your baby would cry like this?"

Well, no- no I didn't.

So we open up the booklet that comes with the DVD to see if there is some secret we are missing out on and this is what we learn.

The letters in PURPLE stand for:
Peak of crying- your baby will cry more each week.  the most at 2 months, then less at 3-5 months
Unexpected- crying can come and go and you don't know why
Resists soothing- your baby may not stop crying no matter what you try
Pain-like face- a crying baby may look like they are in pain, even when they are not
Long lasting- crying can last as much as 5 hours a day, or more
Evening- your baby may cry more in the late afternoon and evening

* babies can still be healthy and normal even if they cry 5 hours a day (while this is good to know....it scares the shit out of me...5 hours a day???)

In case any of you are interested, here is a website that talks a little more about this period of crying.

  1. They should give every parent a copy upon discharge! Haha don't worry - there is a light at the end of the tunnel (you probably think I'm a stinkin liar right now though!!) Also, breastmilk works well for a clogged duct!

  3. I'm so glad she's healthy and well! Sorry to hear about all the crying... that has to be so hard as her Mom! Something I thought of while reading this... there is a couple Mech and I are very good friends with - the husband is in my graduate cohort. They are wonderful, attentive parents, but their first son went through such fits of crying he would force himself to pass out... scared the sh*t out of them to say the least. In the end, he was completely fine and grew out of it (and is now one of the happiest babies we know). Hang in there... you're doing a wonderful job and your love for your sweet baby girl is just so evident!!!

  4. Sorry that I am no help and I am taking all of this in to know what the first few weeks may be like and that it is all normal. Hope you are working in a little "just mommy" time with a warm bath or walk here and there... I can imagine I would need a little time like that to recharge during the first weeks!

  5. Thank you for posting that link, I will check it out and it's something I might find very helpful in just a few weeks. Hopefully you get past the crying very soon!

  6. I sure hope the crying stops soon. I remember that that was the most helpless period for me. And I would also get the most frustrated because I felt like I had done everything I knew to do, and it still wasn't helping. Hang in there! Also, I'm just curious what your doc said about her blocked tear ducts. Chloe has them too.

  8. This crying must be so hard on you! I am sure it is very frustrating. Hopefully she will "out grow" this soon. You must feel good knowing that she was given a clean bill of health at her doctor check up.
